Summary
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2020 Model Y vehicles equipped with a global rear lamp and tow package configuration. A software error prevents the illumination of trailer brake lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Tesla will notify owners, and has released the firmware update over-the-air (OTA) to vehicles as of September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-20-00-002.

Condition
When Model Y is towing a trailer, the brake lamps on the trailer are required to illuminate upon the actuation of the service brake. A software error in certain Model Y vehicles equipped with a global rear lamp variant and a tow package configuration may prevent the towed trailer brake lamps from illuminating upon actuation of the service brake.
Correction
Inspect the firmware version operating on the vehicle and update it as necessary according to the procedure steps.
Procedure
1. On the vehicle touchscreen, touch Controls (vehicle icon) > Software, and scroll down to display the vehicle firmware version.
2. If the vehicle is operating with firmware version:
- 2020.35.101.06, then no further action is necessary
- 2020.36.12, then no further action is necessary
- 2020.40.3 or a newer release than 2020.40.3, then no further action is necessary
- Any other version, then update to the latest available firmware release.
