Brake lamps, backup lamps and turn signal lamps are not affected by this condition and continue to operate as designed. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Vehicle Firmware Component Description : FW ver 2022.28 and later until 2022.40.4.1 (exc) Component Part Number : N/A Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Tesla, Inc. Address : 1 Tesla Road Austin Texas 78725 Country : United States Chronology : – During the week of October 24, 2022, Tesla observed customer complaints primarily from foreign markets that claimed vehicle taillamps were not illuminating. – From October 26, 2022, through November 4, 2022, Tesla investigated vehicle log data and firmware release details as they pertained to the customer complaints. – On November 7, 2022, Tesla completed its investigation and confirmed the suspected root cause, risk assessment, and affected vehicle population. – Tesla reviewed the findings with the executive team and, on November 8, 2022, a voluntary recall determination was made. – As of November 14, 2022, Tesla identified 3 warranty claims and no field reports (received between November 1, 2022, and November 8, 2022) for U.S. vehicles that are related to or may be related to this Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-844 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 condition. Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to the customer, Tesla will deploy an over-the-air (“OTA”) firmware update to correct the firmware anomaly that may cause false fault detections during the vehicle wake up process. The remedy will ensure that all taillamps operate as designed. Tesla does not plan to include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification about pre-notice reimbursement because there are no out of warranty repairs related to this condition. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy OTA firmware update prevents false fault detections during the vehicle wake up process, which ensures that all taillamps operate as designed, whereas a firmware release without the remedy may not prevent false fault detections. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Beginning on November 6, 2022, vehicles in production and in predelivery containment received a firmware release that includes the remedy. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : All Tesla stores and service centers will be notified about this recall on or shortly after November 17, 2022. Owner notification letters will be mailed in accordance with 49 C.F.R. § 577.7. Condition Certain 2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles built with global taillights and running firmware versions 2022.28 and later, but before 2022.40.4.1, may require a firmware update to address intermittently illuminating taillights on one or both sides of the vehicle. This condition does not affect brake lamp, backup lamp, or turn signal lamp operation.
