Production Dates : NOV 30, 2022 – MAR 15, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : Tesla Semi is equipped with a door closure warning system for its rear-hinged side doors that may be operated independently of other doors. When the door closure warning system detects that a side door is not fully latched and the vehicle’s parking brake is not engaged, regardless of the vehicle’s “ignition” status, the system will display a notification on the vehicle’s touchscreen. In addition, a subset of affected vehicles running software release 2023.12 or later allow the operator to dismiss the notification. For side doors like those equipped on Semi, FMVSS 206, S4.1.2.3, requires a door closure warning system that must activate a visual signal when a door latch system is not in its fully latched position and the vehicle ignition is activated. Because the door closure warning system on affected vehicles activates only when the vehicle’s parking brake is not engaged, regardless of its “ignition” status, and because the operator of certain affected vehicles may dismiss the notification from the door closure warning system, affected vehicles do not comply with FMVSS 206, S4.1.2.3. FMVSS 1 : 206 – Door locks and door retention components Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-422 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Although the door closure warning system activates as required when the parking brake is not engaged, thereby warning the operator of potentially driving with an open side door, a dismissible notification for an open side door may not adequately continue to keep the operator informed of an open side door, which may increase the risk of injury. Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : An operator may notice additional noise, vibration or harshness that may indicate that a side door is open. Address : 1 Tesla Road Austin Texas 78725 Country : United States Chronology : – On June 1, 2023, Tesla began investigating the Semi door lock behavior after the software team flagged a potential noncompliance with the rear-hinged-door logic during a routine internal software-compliance audit conducted for quality assurance purposes. – On June 2, 2023, in parallel to the investigation, Tesla began developing a software remedy for the potential noncompliance. – On June 6, 2023, Tesla completed its review and made a voluntary recall determination to remedy a noncompliance with FMVSS 206, S.4.1.2.3. On the same day, Tesla completed development of the software remedy as described below. Tesla began to deploy the software remedy to the vehicle fleet as an over-the-air software update. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Software release 2023.12.5.6 or a later release will introduce a dedicated non-dismissible telltale that will be displayed in all power states when a side door is open, regardless of parking brake state. Tesla began an overthe- air (OTA) deployment of software release 2023.12.5.6 on June 6, 2023. Tesla does not plan to include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification about pre-notice reimbursement because there is no paid repair relating to the underlying condition and owners will receive the remedy free of charge with an OTA software update. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Software releases before 2023.12.5.6 do not contain the remedy and display a door open notification only when a side door is not fully latched and the vehicle’s parking brake is not engaged. In addition, software releases between 2023.12 (inclusive) and 2023.12.5.6 (exclusive) also allow the operator to dismiss the door open notification. Software release 2023.12.5.6 or a later release contains the remedy and displays a nondismissible dedicated telltale in all power states when a side door is open, regardless of parking brake state. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A software release that displays a non-dismissible dedicated telltale when a side door is open in all power states was introduced in production on or about June 6, 2023. Tesla Semi trucks manufactured but not yet delivered with a software release that does not contain the remedy will receive software release 2023.12.5.6 or a later release prior to delivery. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Tesla Semi Service teams will be notified about this recall on or shortly after June 15, 2023.
