– On March 15, 2024, during a Jidoka exercise, the supplier observed one driver seat side airbag module that was assembled without a deflector. – From March 15 to 18, 2024, the supplier reviewed all video recordings of their assembly of the modules that used a deflector from a new sub-supplier, the supply of which began on February 5, 2024. The supplier’s investigation identified seven driver seat side airbag modules that were assembled without a deflector and were provided to Tesla for installation in vehicle production. – On March 25, 2024, the supplier notified Tesla of their findings. – From March 26 to 28, 2024, Tesla reviewed production records to determine vehicles associated with the seven airbag modules at issue. – On March 28, 2024, based on its review, Tesla identified that six vehicles were in Tesla’s possession and had not been delivered to customers. The vehicles were placed in containment for inspection and repair prior to customer delivery. Tesla further identified one vehicle that was delivered to a customer. – On March 29, 2024, following a continued investigation, the supplier confirmed that the seven airbag modules that were assembled without a deflector were the extent of modules that were provided to Tesla for installation in vehicle production. – From April 1 to April 5, 2024, Tesla assessed the absence of a deflector on driver seat side airbag performance. – On April 9, 2024, in parallel, Tesla contacted the owner of the affected vehicle that was delivered to schedule a service appointment for inspection and repair. – On April 12, 2024, Tesla made a determination to voluntarily recall the affected vehicle. The vehicle was remedied on the same day. – No injury or death resulted from this condition.
Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : On April 12, 2024, at no charge to the customer, Tesla replaced the driver
seat side airbag on the affected vehicle with a module that meets specifications.
Tesla will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification about pre-notice reimbursement to owners because the affected vehicle remains covered under the new vehicle warranty and has been remedied.
How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production :
The recalled component was assembled without a deflector. The remedy component was assembled with a deflector and meets specifications.
On March 15, 2024, upon observing the condition in production, the supplier established a clean point by reviewing video recordings of module assembly. By March 29, 2024, based on Tesla’s on-site validation, the supplier’s vision system in production was reprogrammed to detect the condition for inspection.
