Summary
Tesla
, Inc. (Tesla
) is recalling certain 2017-2022 Model 3, 2020-2021 Model Y, and 2021-2022 Model S and Model X vehicles. The window automatic reversal system may not react correctly after detecting an obstruction. Remedy
Tesla
will perform an over-the-air (OTA) software update of the automatic window reversal system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 31, 2032. Owners may contact Tesla
customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla
’s number for this recall is SB-22-00-013.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Condition
Certain model year 2021-2022 Model S and Model X vehicles, model year 2017-2022 Model 3 vehicles, and model year 2019-2022 Model Y vehicles may require a vehicle software update to ensure that the automatic window reversal system complies with regulatory standards.
Correction
Inspect the vehicle software version, and if necessary, update the vehicle software to version 2023.2.12 or later.
Procedure
On the vehicle touchscreen, touch Controls (vehicle icon) > Software, and then scroll down to display the vehicle software version.
- If the vehicle is operating with software version 2.12 or later, no further action is necessary. Use correction code S012270002.
- If the vehicle is operating with a software version earlier than 2.12, update to version 2023.2.12 or later (refer to Service Manual procedure 00020003; Model S , Model X , Model 3, Model Y). Use correction code S022270002.
Chronology :
– During conformity of production testing conducted from August 19, 2022, through August 23, 2022, Tesla
technicians identified window automatic reversal system performance that had greater than expected variations in response to pinch detection.
– Immediately, on August 23, 2022, Tesla
conducted additional compliance tests on multiple samples of each model using various window positions, multiple spring rates and gap designations to address the concern. This testing concluded on September 5, 2022.
– From September 5, 2022, to September 11, 2022, Tesla
analyzed and validated test results through log analysis (current draw and encoder count) and confirmation of repeatability within test set-ups and test execution.
– On September 12, 2022, Tesla
determined that the pinch detection and retraction performance in the test results exceeded the requirements of FMVSS 118, Section 5 (automatic reversal systems), depending on spring force and rod configuration. Accordingly, Tesla
made a determination to issue a voluntary recall.
– Beginning on September 13, 2022, vehicles in production and in pre-delivery containment received a firmware release that sets power operated window operation to the requirements specified in FMVSS 118, Section 4.
– As of September 16, 2022, Tesla
is not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition.

How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy OTA firmware update ensures compliance of the vehicle’s automatic window reversal system to FMVSS 118, Section 5, whereas a firmware release without the remedy does not. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Beginning on September 13, 2022, vehicles in production and in predelivery containment received a firmware release that sets power operated window operation to the requirements specified in FMVSS 118, Section 4, rendering Section 5 not applicable. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : All Tesla stores and service centers will be notified about this recall on or shortly after September 21, 2022. Owner notification letters will be mailed in accordance with 49 C.F.R. § 577.7. Address : 1 Tesla Road Austin Texas 78725 Country : United States Chronology : – During conformity of production testing conducted from August 19, 2022, through August 23, 2022, Tesla technicians identified window automatic reversal system performance that had greater than expected variations in response to pinch detection. – Immediately, on August 23, 2022, Tesla conducted additional compliance tests on multiple samples of each model using various window positions, multiple spring rates and gap designations to address the concern. This testing concluded on September 5, 2022. – From September 5, 2022, to September 11, 2022, Tesla analyzed and validated test results through log analysis (current draw and encoder count) and confirmation of repeatability within test set-ups and test execution. – On September 12, 2022, Tesla determined that the pinch detection and retraction performance in the test results exceeded the requirements of FMVSS 118, Section 5 (automatic reversal systems), depending on spring force and rod configuration. Accordingly, Tesla made a determination to issue a voluntary recall. – Beginning on September 13, 2022, vehicles in production and in pre-delivery containment received a firmware release that sets power operated window operation to the requirements specified in FMVSS 118, Section 4. – As of September 16, 2022, Tesla is not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition.
