Tesla
, Inc. (Tesla
) is recalling certain 2021 Model S exterior side rearview mirrors, part numbers: 1622232-00-B and 1622233-00-B. The driver side exterior rearview mirrors are convex (curved glass) and the passenger side mirrors do not include the “Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear” etched warning. As such, these mirrors fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”
Remedy
Tesla
Service will replace the mirrors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 31, 2022. Owners may contact Tesla
customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla

Inspect Door Mirror Glass
Recall Bulletin: Recall Bulletins are mandatory service procedures that, unless they can be completed via a firmware update that a customer installs through the normal course of ownership, must be carried out by Tesla
-certified Service Centers. Recall work performed by uncertified technicians could lead to unsafe conditions or voided warranty provisions.
Condition
Certain 2021+ Model S vehicles may have received an incorrect left-hand side (LH) and/or right-hand side (RH) door mirror glass during a post-delivery service visit.
Correction
Inspect the LH and RH door mirror glass for symptoms related to the condition. If symptoms are present, replace the LH and/or RH door mirror assemblies.

Procedure
1. Place the straight edge of a small trim tool on the LH door mirror glass (Figure 1).
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the mirror during inspection.
- If the trim tool sits flush to the glass (Figure 2), the LH door mirror glass is flat. No repairs are needed.
- If the trim tool wobbles or does not sit flush to the glass (Figure 3), the LH door mirror glass is convex. Replace the LH door mirror assembly (refer to Service Manual procedure 12091102).
2. Inspect the RH door mirror glass.
- If the RH door mirror glass contains the text, โOBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEARโ (Figure 4), no repairs are needed.
- If the RH door mirror glass does not contain the text, โOBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEARโ (Figure 5), replace the RH door mirror assembly (refer to Service Manual procedure 12091102).

, Inc. has decided that certain Model Year 2021-2022 Model S vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (โFMVSSโ) No. 111 โRear Visibility.โ Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle affected by this action.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
On certain affected vehicles the driverโs side and passengerโs side mirrors intended for foreign markets were installed in error on US vehicles during service visits. This occurred due to an error in the parts ordering system that allowed ordering and consumption of the incorrect parts in the United States. These installed side view mirrors are not compliant with federal regulations (FMVSS 111). A noncompliant mirror may cause a driver to misinterpret the field of view, which could increase the risk of a collision.

Chronology :
– In August 2022, Tesla
was made aware of a forum post in which a customer identified receiving a side view mirror for European market consumption during a service visit in the United States for his vehicle, which was manufactured for, delivered and operated in the United States.
– From August 10 through October 6, 2022, Tesla
investigated service parts ordering histories and distribution of the suspect part numbers within the service channels.
– From October 6 through October 21, 2022, Tesla
investigated and determined consumption of 53 of the suspect part numbers during service visits of US vehicles.
– On October 25, 2022, Tesla
determined that the EU side mirrors that were consumed in the US market during service visits were not compliant with FMVSS 111. Accordingly, Tesla
made a determination to voluntarily recall the mirrors.
– As of October 25, 2022, Tesla
is not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition.

The remedy part for the recalled driverโs side outside rearview mirror is not convex and complies with FMVSS 111. The remedy part for the passenger side outside rearview mirror is convex and complies with FMVSS 111, including the following warning etched on the mirror: โObjects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear.โ
