Summary
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Model X vehicles. The restraint control module (RCM) calibration may cause the front passenger air bag to deploy incorrectly during certain low speed crashes. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”
Remedy
Tesla has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update to recalibrate the RCM, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 14, 2023. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-22-00-015.

REASON FOR THIS RECALL
On affected vehicles, the restraint control module (RCM) calibration may result in the frontal passenger airbag deploying in an unintended configuration during certain low-speed collision events. This may result in noncompliance with the front passenger airbag performance requirements in FMVSS 208 for a 3- or 6-year-old front passenger who is unbelted and out of position. In certain low-speed collision events, where a 3- or 6-year-old front passenger is unbelted and out of position, a passenger airbag that does not comply with FMVSS 208 may increase the risk of injury
WHAT TESLA WILL DO
Tesla remedied the noncompliance with a free over-the-air (“OTA”) software update that corrects the calibration of the restraint control module to ensure that the frontal passenger airbag complies with FMVSS 208.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Please check that your vehicle is running software version 2022.40.200, 2022.44 or any later release, all of which contain the remedy. You can check the software version running on your vehicle by tapping ‘Controls’ then ‘Software’ on your touchscreen. If your vehicle is running any one of the software versions listed above, then there is no further action that you need to take, and you may disregard this notice. If your vehicle is not running one of these software versions, then please install the latest pending software update through your Tesla app, or by tapping the yellow clock icon on your vehicle’s touchscreen and following the prompts.

Update Vehicle Firmware to Correct the Restraint Control Module Calibration
Condition
Certain 2021-2023 Model X vehicles may require a vehicle firmware update to ensure that the front passenger airbag deploys in a manner that complies with regulatory standards applicable to certain low speed collisions.
Correction
Inspect the vehicle firmware version, and if necessary, update the vehicle firmware to version 2022.40.200 or 2022.44 or later.
Procedure
On the vehicle touchscreen, touch Controls (vehicle icon) > Software, and then scroll down to display the vehicle firmware version.
- If the vehicle is operating with a firmware version 40.200 or later, no further action is necessary. Use correction code S012200015.
- If the vehicle is operating with firmware version earlier than 40.200, update to version 2022.40.200 or later (refer to Service Manual procedure 00020003). Use correction code S022200015.
Chronology :
– On October 18, 2022, Tesla conducted a pre-scheduled Conformity of Production test to confirm compliance with FMVSS 208 on a current production Model X vehicle. In the test, the vehicle restraint system deployment logic did not operate as designed.
– On October 25, 2022, additional tests were conducted to confirm the results of the test conducted on October 18, 2022.
– Between November 2 – 7, 2022, based on the results of two prior tests, Tesla conducted out of position confirmatory tests to assess compliance with FMVSS 208, Sections 21, 23 and 25.
– On November 8, 2022, test results were analyzed, and non-compliance was verified with Sections 21.4 and 23.4. A voluntary recall determination was made on the same day.
– As of November 8, 2022, Tesla is not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition.
