Second-Row Seat Frame May Be Improperly Secured
A loose seat frame bolt may reduce the seat belt system’s performance, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Summary
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Model Y vehicles. The bolts securing the second-row seat back frames may not have been securely tightened.
Remedy
Tesla Service Centers will inspect and tighten the bolts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 25, 2023. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-23-13-001.

Condition
Certain Model Y vehicles may require install or retorque of the LH and/or RH second-row seat frame bolts.
Correction
Inspect and confirm that the LH and RH second-row seat frame bolts are torqued to Tesla specifications. If required, install new bolts or apply threadlocker and retorque the LH and/or RH second-row seat frame bolts.

Procedure
1. Open all the doors and lower all the windows.
2. Move the driver and front passenger seats fully forward.
3. Remove the LH second-row seat back panel (refer to Service Manual procedure 13082302).
4. Remove the LH outer second-row headrest (refer to Service Manual procedure 13050702).
5. Remove the headrest guides (x2) from the LH second-row seat.
NOTE: On each headrest guide, pull back on the lower portion of the headrest guide (Figure 1) to release the tab while also pushing up to remove the headrest guide from the seat assembly (Figure 2).
6. Release the clips (x4) (Figure 3) that attach the LH second-row seatback trim assembly to the seat assembly, and then lift the trim assembly with the foam pad upward to remove them from the seat.
7. Fold down the second-row armrest (skip this step when performing the RH second-row seatback).
8. Momentarily rest the LH second-row seatback on the second-row lower seat cushion.
CAUTION: Avoid straining the seatback electrical harness.
NOTE: Extend the seatbelt as needed.
9. Inspect the second-row seat frame bolts (x4) (Figures 4, 5, and 6). Check that each bolt is fastened to 56 Nm using a torque wrench.
- If any of the bolts are fastened to less than 56 Nm, continue to the next step.
- If all bolts are fastened to 56 Nm, the bolts are fastened to specification. Skip to step 11.
10. For any frame bolt(s) that were NOT fastened to specification (56 Nm), or any bolts that need to be installed, perform these sub steps:
a. Remove the bolt(s). If a bolt is needed, obtain a new bolt (1057091-00-D).
b. Apply Loctite 222 threadlocker to the bolt threads.
c. Fasten the bolt(s) to 56 Nm.
11. Slide the LH second-row seatback trim and foam pad assemblies onto the seat, and then fasten the clips (x4) (Figure 7).
NOTE: Make sure the bottom retainers slide into place (Figure 7).
12. Install the headrest guides (x2) onto the LH second-row seat. Pressing each guide downwards until the lower tab
13. Install the LH outer second-row headrest (refer to Service Manual procedure 13050702).
14. Install the LH second-row seat back panel (refer to Service Manual procedure 13082302).
15. Repeat steps 3โ14 for the RH second-row seat.
16. Restore the driver and front passenger seats back to their original position.
17. Close all the windows and close all the doors.
Chronology :
– On December 10, 2022, an operator in Teslaโs Fremont, CA, manufacturing facility identified a seat back bolt that secured a Model Y second-row driver-side seat back frame to the lower seat frame that was not torqued to specification.
– On December 10 and 11, 2022, in Teslaโs Austin, TX, and Fremont manufacturing facilities, respectively, second-row seats for Model Y production were contained and manufacturing personnel began an inspection to confirm that the seat back bolts were torqued to specification.
– From December 11, 2022, through January 27, 2023, in coordination with the supplier, Tesla conducted an investigation to identify a root cause, including which bolts in which seat back frame(s) were impacted. Tesla also began a review of manufacturing records to identify a potentially affected vehicle population.
– From January 30 through February 13, 2023, Tesla conducted a risk assessment of the condition using CAE analysis.
– On February 17, 2023, Tesla completed its investigation and review of manufacturing records and confirmed the root cause, risk assessment, and affected vehicle population. A recall determination was made on the same day.
– As of February 23, 2023, Tesla has identified 5 warranty claims, received between December 9, 2022, and February 14, 2023, that may be related to the conditions described above. Tesla is not aware of any injuries or deaths that may be related to such conditions.

Supplier manufacturing records indicate that one or more of the bolts that secure the second-row driver-side and passenger-side seat back frames to the lower seat frames may not have been torqued to specifications. If the bolts that secure the seat back frames to the lower seat frames are not torqued to specifications, the seat belt system may not perform as designed in a collision, which may increase the risk of an injury for occupants seated in affected second-row seating positions.

Description of the Defect : On Model Y vehicles, the second-row driver-side seat back frame (second-row driver-side and center seating positions) and the second-row passenger-side seat back frame (second-row passenger-side seating position) are secured to the lower seat frame with 4 bolts per seat back. Description of the Safety Risk : The second-row seat belt system loads go through the lower seat frame. If the bolts that secure the frame to the seat backs are not torqued to specifications, the seat belt system may not perform as designed in a collision, which may increase the risk of an injury for occupants seated in affected second-row seating positions.

– On December 10, 2022, an operator in Tesla
โs Fremont, CA, manufacturing facility identified a seat back bolt that secured a Model Y second-row driver-side seat back frame to the lower seat frame that was not torqued to specification. – On December 10 and 11, 2022, in Teslaโs Austin, TX, and Fremont manufacturing facilities, respectively, second-row seats for Model Y production were contained and manufacturing personnel began an inspection to confirm that the seat back bolts were torqued to specification. – From December 11, 2022, through January 27, 2023, in coordination with the supplier, Tesla conducted an investigation to identify a root cause, including which bolts in which seat back frame(s) were impacted. Tesla also began a review of manufacturing records to identify a potentially affected vehicle population. – From January 30 through February 13, 2023, Tesla conducted a risk assessment of the condition using CAE analysis. – On February 17, 2023, Tesla completed its investigation and review of manufacturing records and confirmed the root cause, risk assessment, and affected vehicle population.
