Steering Wheel May Disconnect from Steering Column
A loose fastener may allow the steering wheel to disconnect from the steering column, which can cause a loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy
Tesla
Service will inspect and replace the fastener as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 28, 2023. Tesla
’s number for this recall is SB-23-32-001.

Condition
On some Model Y vehicles, the steering wheel retention bolt may not have been torqued to specification.
Correction
Inspect the vehicle for symptoms related to the condition. If symptoms are present, replace the steering wheel retention bolt, and torque the new bolt to specification.

Procedure
1. Remove the driver airbag (refer to Service Manual procedure 20010102).
2. Perform a torque check on the bolt that attaches the steering wheel to the vehicle (80 Nm) (Figure 1).
- If the bolt is torqued to specification, no repairs are needed.
- If the bolt is not torqued to specification, replace the bolt, and torque the new bolt to specification.
3. Install the driver airbag (refer to Service Manual procedure 20010102).
Chronology :
– On May 4, 2023, Tesla
Service technician escalated a vehicle concern after observing a loose feel in the steering wheel while servicing the vehicle for a seat trim repair.
– From May 5, 2023, to May 19, 2023, Field Quality and Factory Quality investigated the service and production records of the vehicle in question as well as production records for all Tesla
factories.
– On May 22, 2023, Tesla
made the determination to file a voluntary recall to inspect and repair, as necessary, the population of vehicles identified through the investigation described above.
– Tesla
identified 4 warranty claims and one field report (received between November 12, 2022, and April 26, 2023) that are related to or may be related to this condition. Tesla
is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition.

Manufacturing and service records suggest that there may be a correlation between certain manufacturing record characteristics and the fastener being installed but not torqued to specification. Service will inspect affected vehicles for proper torque of the fastener that secures the steering wheel to the steering column. If an improperly torqued fastener is found during the inspection, Tesla
Service will install a new fastener and torque it to the correct specification. Tesla
does not plan to include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification about pre-notice reimbursement because there are no out of warranty repairs related to this condition. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : N/A; the underlying condition is independent of the involved component, which remains unchanged.
